HARDI Reports May Sales Down 4.8% Entering Cooling Season

Heating, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Distributors International released its monthly TRENDS report on July 6. The report showed member distributor sales decreased 4.8% in May 2026 compared to May 2025. HARDI's senior market analyst called it "a lousy start for the first meaningful month of cooling season." However, May 2026 had one fewer billing day than the prior year. HARDI estimated sales would have been roughly flat with equal billing days. Annual sales growth for the 12 months through May stood at 2.6%.
Softer distributor sales suggest cooling season demand may not deliver the volume spike many contractors were counting on.
Check your inventory levels and monitor local weather patterns before stocking up on additional equipment for what may be a slower summer than expected.
Key Takeaways:
- HARDI distributor sales fell 4.8% in May 2026 year-over-year
- One fewer billing day accounts for most of the decline
- Trailing 12-month sales growth stands at 2.6%
